6.1 THE NEW WORLD Five hundred years ago, it would have been outrageous to suggest that Columbus' New World across the Atlantic would ever become a thriving civilization. But people with foresight today will realize that Mars is the next frontier. Furthermore, it is likely that history will repeat itself on Mars with the same elements of economics and geography which influenced the rise of American Independence. So, not only is Mars the next frontier, but eventually, it will be independent. The American Independence won by Washington's armies was the culmination of a process that began almost 150 years earlier with the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims set sail for Plymouth Rock in 1640 primarily to gain religious freedom. They were being persecuted in England for their religious beliefs. The Pilgrims discovered it was much easier to simply leave England than it was to stay there and try to liberalize British laws. There is a parallel between 17th Century England and 21st Century America. In America today, it is permissible to go to certain places in your mind, but not to others. Moreover, exploration of the forbidden territories reveals an earth-shattering truth---the immortality of the human spirit. This new truth rocks the pillars of the mass-consumption materialism that has engulfed America. An explosive new belief system like this is as odious to the Wall Street elite of today as the Pilgrims' religious zeal was to the House of Lords in Parliament. So, once again progressive new beliefs are being repressed by authority, creating a pent-up demand for freedom. If history repeats itself, this thirst for freedom in today's new generations will eventually culminate in Martian Independence, the same way the Pilgrim's quest for religious freedom eventually gave rise to the American Revolution. |
